MANILA, Philippines - Gilas head coach Chot Reyes is hoping that PBA veterans JuneMar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, Calvin Abueva, Allein Maliksi and Terrence Romeo will be allowed to play by their pro teams for the FIBA Asia Cup at the Nouhad Nawfal Stadium in Zouk Mosbeh, a town 12 kilometers north of Beirut, on Aug. 8-20.
The deadline to submit the preliminary 24-man lineup for the tournament to FIBA Asia fell last midnight and Reyes named the five PBA players to the pool. He will choose the final 12-man roster from the 24.
“No problem with the Cadets,” said Reyes. “They’re cleared to play by the PBA.” The Gilas cadets in the pool are Alaska’s Carl Bryan Cruz, Barangay Ginebra’s Kevin Ferrer, Blackwater’s Mac Belo, Phoenix’ Matthew Wright, Rain Or Shine’s Mike Tolomia, Star’s Jio Jalalon and TNT’s Roger Pogoy. San Miguel Beer’s Arnold Van Opstal was struck out of the list for failing to report to practice while Mahindra’s Russel Escoto is recovering from a left knee injury. Other Cadets not in the pool are GlobalPort’s Von Pessumal, Meralco’s Ed Daquioag and NLEX’ Ponzo Gotladera.
The PBA Board has declined to issue an order mandating all teams to make at least one veteran available for the FIBA Asia Cup because it isn’t a qualifier for either the World Cup or Olympics. However, the PBA will leave it up to teams to lend players to Gilas at their option. So far, the word is seven PBA teams are willing to give up players for the FIBA Asia Cup. The teams are Rain Or Shine, TNT, Meralco, NLEX, Phoenix, Blackwater and Mahindra. If the five other teams stand down, Gilas will play in Lebanon without Fajardo, Aguilar, Abueva, Maliksi and Romeo.
Reyes confirmed that Fajardo, Aguilar, Abueva, Romeo and Maliksi – who played for Gilas in the SEABA Championships here last May – are in the 24-man pool but depending on their release, may or may not be in the final 12-man cast. Reyes will reportedly meet with PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa to discuss the issue tomorrow.
SBP president Al Panlilio said yesterday the FIBA Asia Cup was included in the list of tournaments where PBA veterans may be tapped under the terms of a Memorandum of Agreement between the PBA and SBP. “The MOA was very clear that the FIBA Asia Cup was on the list and the SBP had the right to choose PBA vets,” said Panlilio. “The only thing is that the Board feels it’s a non-qualifying tournament. We’ve explained that it’s a good training ground as all the other Asian teams (including Australia and New Zealand) are sending top players and secondly, the Philippines is represented in the FIBA Central Board by MVP (SBP chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan).” Another consideration is the FIBA Asia Cup will determine world rankings of the participating countries, a major consideration in the classification for future draws.
Reyes said the 24-man pool includes Andray Blatche and Christian Standhardinger, both as naturalized players. But only one of them may be listed in the final 12-man roster. Standhardinger, whose mother Elizabeth Santos Hermoso is Filipina and father Gunter is German, was born in Munich. Gilas team manager Butch Antonio said FIBA approved Standhardinger’s application to play for the Philippines as a naturalized player early this week. Under FIBA rules, the 6-8 center isn’t qualified to play as a local because he was issued his Philippine passport after turning 16. Others in the 24-man pool are Kobe Paras, Kiefer Ravena, Bobby Ray Parks, Baser Amer, Jayson Castro, Troy Rosario, Kevin Alas, Raymond Almazan, Gabe Norwood and Norbert Torres.
In the FIBA Asia Cup, the Philippines is bracketed in Group B with Iraq, China and Qatar. The top three teams from each of the four groups after the first round will advance to the second round where the 12 survivors will be split into two groups of six. The top four from each group in the second round will move on to the eight-team knockout quarterfinals. Then, the four winners play in the knockout semifinals with the survivors disputing the championship in the final.
